The definition of "high level" and "mid level" will change as you progress in power. I don't Augment gear that I'm actively trying to replace until I have Augmented everything else. If my gems available for Augmenting are mid-level, I target gear that is very good, but not perfect. If my gems available for Augmenting with are fairly high level, I target the very best Ancients I have. When I feel like I'm hitting a wall, I try to drop 3-4 Augments on currently un-Augmented gear. I don't start implementing Augments until I feel like I'm hitting a wall. When my main gems (Trapped, etc) drop below 60% upgrade chance, I start upgrading gems for Augmenting.
